Fixlexic
Local-only bionic reading Chrome extension for ADHD and dyslexia, with zero network access
Project Overview
Fixlexic is a Chrome extension that bolds the start of every word so your eyes have something to anchor on, a technique known as bionic reading. I built it for ADHD and dyslexic readers who want an extension they can trust: it runs entirely inside the page, with no fetch calls, no analytics, and no permissions beyond page access, storage (settings), and activeTab (the shortcut).
With Fixlexic

The start of each word is bolded; your brain fills in the rest.
The two sliders

The two settings in action: how much of each word gets bolded (30% to 70%) and how heavy the bold is (500 to 900).
On a real page

Same Wikipedia paragraph with the extension off and on, at the default settings (45% of each word, weight 700). Links keep their color and the bolding follows them.
How It Works
Each word gets ceil(length x ratio) letters bolded, never fewer than one and never the whole word. The ratio (30 to 70%, default 45%) and font weight (500 to 900) are adjustable from the popup, and Alt+B toggles it per site.
A TreeWalker visits text nodes during idle time, skipping code blocks, inputs, editable regions, SVG, and canvas, while a MutationObserver catches text that loads later, like infinite scroll. Settings sync through chrome.storage.
The popup

The toolbar popup: a global switch, a per-site switch, the two sliders, and a live preview of the current settings. Alt+B toggles the current site without opening it.
